Content:

The Safety and Health Policy and its impact on the implementation of the management programme. The importance and purpose of implementing safety and health management programme components in the workplace are explained in terms of the consequences to the health and safety of individuals and the impact on production. The importance of integrating safety and health considerations in all routine activities is explained in terms of the consequences to the health and safety of individuals and the impact on production

Outcome:

The qualifying learner is capable of:

• Explaining the requirements for the implementation of a safety and health management programme in the workplace.
  • Implementing the procedures for evaluating safety and health performance in a workplace, as required by the safety and health management programme Fire contexts, e.g. the nature of the area where the fire is, adjacent hazards, structural materials.
  • Methods of fire transmission, i.e. conduction, induction, radiation.
  • Combustible hazards, e.g. combustible materials and temperatures, compressed containers, electrical equipment, structure and layout of the site.
  • Firefighting equipment including hoses, extinguishers and buckets.
  • Changes in a fire, i.e. wind direction, backdraft, ventilation, the release of hazardous substances, radiation, or as a result of incorrect application of
  • firefighting procedures.
  • Fire monitoring issues include status of fire, status of firefighting equipment, controlling access, structural damage and equipment retrieval,
  • firefighting casualties.

Outcomes:

1. Discuss and explain procedures for dealing with fires in the workplace
   Identify the type of fire, its context and select the appropriate firefighting procedure

   5. Retreat from fire site and hand over to appropriate personnel
